Paying with Plastic, 2nd Edition: The Digital Revolution in Buying and Borrowing by David S. Evans, Richard Schmalensee Amazon Price: $17.79
Customer Review: If you work in the payments, credit card or finance industry this book is great. It has a very easy to read history about credit cards, who knew Diners Club invented the category in the 50's. But more importantly is how the industry is moving forward and progressing.
Overall, this is a book you read if you need to, but I can't imagine anyone outside the industry reading it. You would have to be the most intellecually curious person in the world if you read this cause you were interested in how credit cards work.
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard Handbook by Timothy M. Virtue Amazon Price: $52.39
Customer Review: With so much media attention these days on breaches of security by hackers intent upon stealing sensitive customer financial data, this handbook is a must-have to protect your customers and the reputation of your company. Written in a easy, jargon-free style, the handbook is like a cookbook for credit card security. One of the key chapters concerns the importance of audit trails and network monitoring and testing.
Protocols for Secure Electronic Commerce by Mostafa Hashem Sherif Amazon Price: Customer Review: This title contains excellent explanation on protocols of various types of electronic payment systems. The contents are not limited to well-known protocols such as SSL and SET (even these are explained clearly)-- the authors succeeded in writing on almost all payment systems from today's systems of banks and EDI to cryptographic protocols including micropayment (NetBill, Millicent, Mondex, etc.) and some digital moneys. Also mechanisms of integrated circuit cards are included. Most protocols are clearly described with many charts. If you want to be familiar with electronic payment systems, this book is a must.
Web Security, Privacy and Commerce, 2nd Edition by Simson Garfinkel Amazon Price: $40.45
Customer Review: I think this is another one of those big books that tries to cover too many topics. It's really just a general discussion about web security, rather than a handbook of any kind. There is a lot of boring history, storytelling, etc.
I do think there were a handful of solid rules-of-thumb and practical wisdom, and I'm glad that I read this book, but it could have been condensed dramatically.
I believe most people who are going to actually deploy some kind of web service would probably get all the same info, plus much more practical detail, by reading books on the particular software they plan to use (e.g. Apache, Sendmail, Unix, etc).
Identity Theft Victims' Assistance Guide: The Process of Healing by Judith M. Collins, Sandra K. Hoffman Amazon Price: $3.95
Customer Review: My children are MSU graduates so I am especially proud of Dr. Collins affiliation with this fine institution and I am a fan of her work.
The only thing I would add is the advantage of an Identity Theft Shield. Yes, we can take care of a lot of these steps on our own. However, most people's lives are very busy and complicated and they do not have time to do all they can do to protect themselves. Further, if/when they are victims ~ why re-invent the wheel? Have professionals work for you.
House of Cards by J. Friedman Amazon Price: Customer Review: Although old, this is a thorough review of James Robinson's rule at American Express. Robinson was a consensus builder who sought to grow American Express by acquisition. However his poor strategy brought him to get out of cable too early, and the brokerage age when it was too late.
His rule weakened American Express. What is prevalent throughout this book is the shark like atmosphere in American business, where one person is seeking to displace another. Some heavy hitters are in this book such as Sandy Weill, Lou Gerstner, and Cohen.
This is a nice book about how an American icon company is badly run. It shows how and why American companies have not fared well in the international market. The caption on the cover of the book equates it with Barbarians at the Gates, and I think this book is as good as that. A nice thorough review of what went wrong at American Express.
