Zero Day Threat: The Shocking Truth of How Banks and Credit Bureaus Help Cybe... by Byron Acohido, Jon Swartz Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: Zero Day Threat: the Shocking Truth of How Banks and Credit Bureaus Help Cyber Crooks Steal Your Money and Identity is an interesting and eye-opening look at how banks and credit card companies make ID theft and fraud rather elementary. But with all that, this book must be read in the larger context of how today's society deals with, and is often oblivious to risk. When is comes to risk, American society tolerates tens of thousands of drunk-driving deaths, gives millions in federal tobacco subsidies, and is oblivious about near-epidemics such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. With all that, it is doubtful that the myriad horror stories Zero Day Threat details will persuade Congress or the other players to do anything to curtail the problem with identity theft and internet fraud.
The internet and web have indeed revolutionized society, and there is hardly an industry that has not been positively affected by the net. On the down side, the net is the new conduit for criminals. For example, in the few years before the web became ubiquitous, U.S. and international law enforcement nearly had a noose around the child pornography industry and brought it to a near standstill. After the web, authorities have given up hope that child pornography can ever be contained.
Similarly, white-collar crime and fraud has been exacerbated by the net. Zero Day Threat details the various loopholes that criminals use to carry out their attacks and crimes. Each of the book's 18 chapters is divided into 3 section, exploiters -- which details how the crime lords and their teams carry out the crimes, enablers -- which details the history and current practices of credit card companies, banks, credit bureaus, and data brokers, and expediters -- which recounts how technology and technologies enable these crimes. I found that the breaking up of the chapters into such triplets is occasionally confusing, and you are left wondering what story you are in.
The book is based on the premise that the payment industry, namely the credit card companies, banks, credit bureaus and data brokers have created an infrastructure that is pliable, nearly endlessly extendable, but paper-thin when it comes to security. The system is built for ease of access, ease of granting credit, but without a robust security infrastructure or privacy controls.
Consider that the PCI Security Standards Council was not created until late 2004, and that will give you ...
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff About Money: Spiritual and Practical Ways to Crea... by Richard Carlson Amazon Price: $9.56
Customer Review: This book contains 100 short essays of the author's insights of how to be more productive, successful, and happy in the areas of personal finance and business. To the extent of being thought-provoking and useful, I think the book is pretty effective.
My one quibble is that the title of the book gave me the impression that the content would be extremely relevant to money matters and maybe only half of it is. In other words, much of the advice given --while valuable-- can really be applied in all areas of your life, not just money. This fact doesn't make the advice bad, but be prepared to read more about life philosophy rather than specific money tips.
Get to It! Budget Book: A Fresh Start to Personal Finances to Help You...Get ... by Cheryl G. Hosking Amazon Price: Customer Review: In terms of getting organized and taking control of your financial responsibilities, this is virtually certain to be the most important single book you will ever read. It will literally save you a fortune and zero out financial stress forever. The simple changes I have adopted because of this book have made a world of difference in my family finances.
I am not only making this my personal financial handbook, I am teaching my children Cheryl Hosking's system. She has done all the research and testing. You just have to adopt her system. It not only works like a charm, it is easy to stick with the program. The book includes the exact information, including the tracking forms I needed to get painlessly organized.
This book rates an A+++. It takes the pain out of a normally painful task. There is no fluff or hype here. The book is well designed, concise and eminently practical.
If you only buy one book this year, do yourself or someone you love a huge favor and make this the book. It's that good and it's that valuable.
Pay It Down!: From Debt to Wealth on $10 a Day by Jean Chatzky Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: I enjoyed this book's simple, no nonsense approach to getting a handle on debt. It was very "readable." I especially enjoyed the actual manuscripts of what to say to credit card companies, and sample letters to write to dispute things. Very helpful book.
How To Get All The Credit You Want And Erase Your Bad Credit Record: And Eras... by Bob Hammond Amazon Price: $8.95
Customer Review: This book is 8 years out of date. In working with this text I found that many of the names of the organizations listed had changed, all the listed phone numbers were invalid, and most of the addresses and zip codes had changed. Therefore the validity of the "work around" suggestions are suspect. You will end up using a different book, one more current, so you may as well start there rather than with this one.
AEPA Professional Knowledge- Elementary (91) Secrets Study Guide: AEPA Test R... by AEPA Exam Secrets Test Prep Team Amazon Price: Customer Review: What a waste of my money and time! DO NOT buy this product. I wish someone has forewarned me. The guide will not help you with the test. It is all about test taking tips such as don't drink coffee on the day of the exam. Are you kidding me! This book is a complete rip-off. I am now searching for a real study guide for the test.
Personal Finance 101 - A Beginner's Guide: What Every High School and Univers... by Peter Salmon Amazon Price: $7.95
Customer Review: This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.
This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.
I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future. I loved it!
